South Americans know it well, but the rest of us might need some introduction: Carmelo, Uruguay is on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, three hours by car (or a negligible plane flight) up the river from Buenos Aires, and not much farther from Montevideo. And the new Four Seasons Carmelo presents a pretty strong inducement for making the trip — suddenly Punta del Este seems positively run-of-the-mill, by comparison.
To call it small would do it no disservice. With just 24 suites and 20 freestanding bungalows it certainly doesn’t give off that big-resort vibe. The feeling is one of immersion in the forest setting, and the six bungalows that overlook the river are a special treat. And the design, while not exactly avant-garde, is a good deal more eclectic than the usual luxury fare, incorporating elements from as far afield as China and Indonesia.
This part of the world is tipped to see a bit more high-end hospitality traffic in coming years, but for now the Four Seasons is ahead of the game. Golfers may be aware that there’s a first-class course right there on the premises, and the rest of us are content with the tennis club, the gym and pool, and perhaps a bit of biking, riding or boating.
How To Get There:
Four Seasons Hotel Carmelo is approximately a 3 hours drive or a 30 minute flight from Ezeiza International Airport. Montevideo Airport in Uruguay is approximately a 4 hour drive. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers from Carmelo Airport.
