Bologna may be the original college town, and home to a thriving bike culture not seen this side of Amsterdam, but that doesn’t mean you’re in for student housing: the Baglioni is a classic five-star grand hotel, by far the poshest in town. After all, even a university town can expect its share of visiting dignitaries and heads of state — where better to stow them than a centuries-old palazzo in the heart of the historic city center?
It’s enough to restore your faith in opulent old-world luxury: think endless expanses of marble, innumerable yards of printed fabrics, and a near-baroque excess of antique furnishings. Rooms differ widely in size and plan, and style too — some are heavy and Romantic, others light and floral, and all feature officious marble bathrooms and the full complement of mod cons: satellite TV, work desks, internet access.
The restaurant is a fine one, in keeping with Bologna’s status as a traditional-style culinary capital, and is exquisitely decorated, with a 16th-century frescoed ceiling by the famed Carraci brothers (who lend the restaurant its name). Service throughout the hotel is top-notch, fit for a VIP, and while the ostentatious décor may not be visually quiet, you’d be hard pressed to hear the sounds of the city through the rooms’ state-of-the-art soundproofing.
