Tucked away on one of Marrakech’s winding side streets, Riad 72 is a pint-sized modernist haven offering a bit of Italian style, courtesy of its Milanese owner. Originally a palace, this harmonious retreat is filled with rich red fabrics accenting plush white floor cushions, glowing candles flickering in every corner, and a gurgling fountain forming the centerpiece of the flowering courtyard. Adding to the sense of calm is the relative remove from the center — guests need to walk a bit to reach some of the medina’s attractions — and the extraordinarily small size, just three rooms and one suite.
Rooms are elegant spaces with lantern-filtered lighting, high ceilings, views over the courtyard and bathrooms constructed from traditional Moroccan tadelakt plaster, and in the Karma Suite, an intricately carved wooden ceiling and a Japanese-style bath. The expansive rooftop terrace is one of the tallest in Marrakech, with ample lounge space for sunbathing, sipping tea, and taking in views of the city skyline.
With only about eight guests at a time, Riad 72’s proprietor and cook can afford to cater to individual whims. There are no proper meal times or locations, for instance — guests decide what they wish to eat, choosing from a list of recommended dishes or substituting their own ideas, and then a staff member makes a run to the local market to choose the freshest produce and meat. Afternoon tea in the courtyard or dessert on the terrace at sunset — guests are served whenever and wherever they like.
How to get there:
Riad 72 is approximately a 15 minute drive from Marrakech-Menara Airport. Taxis cost approximately 15 Euros one way. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
