The San Juan archipelago harbors near-mythical beauty amid its undeveloped islands and seascapes. Its historical relevance is just as intriguing. Spend the day discovering this remote wilderness with a naturalist guide. As the morning ferry cruises to Friday Harbor, keep an eye out for sealife and birds. Then embark on a 3-hour Orca search by kayak, passing wildlife refuges and rugged coastline. Picnic with local fare and a glass of wine, then explore historic British and American “Pig War” camps. As evening sets, visit an island winery or lavender farm before heading back to the ferry or optional flight.
Itinerary
We head North through the Skagit Valley to the jumping off point to the world-renowned archipelago. It is here where we board the ferry and cruise to Friday Harbor, keeping an eye out for one of our resident Orcas, Porpoise, Stellar or California Sea lion, Seal, River Otter and many types of seabirds!
After picking up our lunch from the Market Chef we head across the island and into Roche Harbor. We then embark on a guided 3-hour “Orca Search by Kayak!” in Haro Strait hoping to spot orca up close and personal!* Realizing that seeing Orca whales is really a bonus, our search almost always includes harbor seals, great blue heron, bald eagles, kelp forests, river otter, lots of sea birds and colorful inter-tidal marine life.
Furthermore, we will experience at least three wildlife refuges, paddle along remote rugged coastline all the while taking in the views of the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Baker, a cormorant rookery and more.
Next we venture to Lighthouse Park for a picnic lunch and glass of wine while spotting for orca at the only State Park in the country devoted to observing orca, “Lime Kiln State Park.”
Time permitting we will visit the historic American and British “Pig War” Camps, where the opposing armies were encamped during a post-Civil War boundary dispute between the United States and England.
