This 50 meters high natural rock arch was created millions of years ago, by the collapse of two limestone caves. The sea around it is very deep and dark blue ,which is why it is called the Azure Window. The rocks in this area are encrusted with fossilized crustaceans, evidence that most of the island was once covered by water. In front of the Azure Window is the Blue Hole, and The Chimney, two of the most popular dive sites in Gozo.
This giant doorway is among the most photographed objectives in Malta, especially during winter time, when the rough seas put on a spectacular show. The arch is in a dangerous condition because of large pieces of rock falling down and it is said that it will disappear in a few years. So if you wanna take your pictures, now is the time.
