Charles Bridge (Karluv most)

( 2 user reviews )

General

It was built in 1357, in place of even older Judith Bridge. During the summer time, the bridge is full with vendors, musicians and painters and of course, curious tourists.

The bridge was constructed by architect Petr Parléř, who also build the Prague Castle. It is said that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar, to make the construction stronger. And it seems that it was a good idea, since the bridge survived several floods, the most recent in 2002. The many statues along the both sides of the bridge are mainly copies of the original ones. The most famous off all statues is the one of St. Nepomuk, a Czech martyr saint. The plaque on the statue is so shiny, as it was polished by the countless people touching it, for good luck, over the centuries.

Although in the past a tram used to pass by the bridge, and also cars were allowed, nowadays is a pedestrian street. Taking a walk on the bridge in the evening, at sunset, will give you the chance to see a great view of the city, especially of the Prague Castle.

It is a wonderful place to take a walk and admire its incredible architecture. Usually the bridge is full of painters, singers and different performers that add to the glamour of the place. I found great inspiration in this romantic bridge during my visits there and that is why it’s the place I chose to propose to my wife. We are now a happy family waiting for our first child. I bought 2 paintings from the bridge with its image which now hang in our bedroom.
