An ancient temple complex, built in the 11th century along the Pakrisan river. This is one of Bali's oldest monuments and it is believed that is was dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. Gunung Kawi Temple is situated east of Ubud and if you arrive there in the morning, you might just find yourself alone, or just with a few other travelers.
The complex comprises ten shrines, carved in rock and standing seven meters high. In Balinese Hinduism, it is believed that the water which flows over a shrine has divine properties. Because of this belief and the proximity of Pakrisan river, Gunung Kawi Temple is an important source of holy water.
The complex is located in a unique setting, hidden in a valley and surrounded by green rice fields.
