Historic Center of Sighișoara

General

It's plan is similar to the German town from late medieval period.

The fortress of Sighisoara is the best preserved construction with medieval architecture, in Gothic and Baroque style, from the eastern part of Europe. The city has narrow streets, and massive brick houses, surrounded by high walls. In the beginning, it had 14 defence tours, but only 9 are still visible today. The Clock Tower is the most famous and impressive, with a height of 64 meters and dating since the 14th century. The clock has seven figurines which symbolize the weekdays. Nowadays, it houses the town's History Museum. 90% of the buildings, houses and fortresses remained intact, and they give the area a special something, which makes it unique in Europe. It is also one of the few inhabited fortress-cities from Romania and Europe.

Sighisoara is an outstanding testimony to the culture of the Transylvanian Saxons, a culture that is coming to a close after 850 years and will continue to exist only through its architectural and urban monuments. The apparently unstoppable process of emigration by the Saxons, the social stratum which had formed and upheld the cultural traditions of the region, threatens the survival of their architectural heritage as well.
