Located on the northern border of Arizona with southern Utah, Monument Valley is not a valley in the strict sense, rather a wide and flat landscape, dotted with formations rising hundreds of feet high. These are the remnants of the sandstone layers that used to cover the region.
The red color of the scenery comes from the iron oxide and the gray-blue rock are colored by the manganese oxide.
Tours of the Monument Valley are available, but you can also pay a fee and take a tour inside with your own car. Some parts though are only accessible by guided tours, like the Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa.
To make the tour more interesting you can take advantage of the hot air balloon flights are available May 1 through October 31 of the small airplane flights.
