The Palm Islands are located off the coast of the UAE, in the Persian Gulf, adding 120 kilometers (72 miles) of beaches to the city. They have a large number of residential properties and entertainment centers. The three islands are The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira. The sand from which The Palm is made was dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf. 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand were used only for the first two of the islands. Palm Deira was the last one of the islands to be built, using 300 million cubic meters of sand.
Its construction began in 2001 and its primarily purpose was to be a retreat and residential area for living, relaxation, and leisure. It has beautiful boutique hotels, shoreline apartments and nice villas.
This is the centerpiece of The Palm, inspired by the water lily. It resembles a large water lily sitting on a reflecting pool. The island is twice the size of Palm Jumeirah and is more an entertainment destinations, with things to do for both adults and children. Some of the attractions include a Sea Village, a water theme park.
The Palm Deira is the largest of the three palm islands covering 14 kilometers (8.4 miles) in length and 8.5 kilometers (5.1 miles) in width. It contains a residential area of 8,000 two story villas, shopping malls, clubs and sport facilities.
The Palm is one of Dubai's premier attractions and it has also been called 'the eight wonder of the world'.
