The black sand on this beach was formed by the volcano lava flowing into the ocean. When cooling, this beautiful black sand is formed. The beach is home to the endangered Hawksbill and Green turtles, which can often be seen relaxing on the black sand.
Taking sand from the beach is not allowed and legend says that anyone who takes a volcanic rock or sand will be cursed by the Hawaiian volcano goddess. We don't know if this is true or not, but still, you shouldn't try it.
