The ruins of Volubilis are some of the best preserved Roman ruins in northern Africa. Part of the reason the remains are in such good order is that when the Romans moved out of Morocco local tribes moved into the city and kept it in good repair until an earthquake struck the region in the 4th century. In 1997 the site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
