The volcano is located on the Stromboli Island, part of the Aeolian Islands.
Erupting continuously for over 2.000 years, Stromboli has one of the world's longest recorded periods of activity. The eruptions not huge, they are minor gas explosions throwing out lava bubbles. Such explosions can even happen several times every hour. When eruptions like these ones take place somewhere else, they are called 'strombolian eruptions'.
Because of its often eruptions, Stromboli is called the 'lighthouse of the Mediterranean'.
