General

These thermal baths are what made the small alpine village known all over Switzerland and we could say to the rest of the world. In the 1908s, the community of Vals bought a bankrupt hotel and assigned the task to transform it into a thermal bath to Peter Zumthor.

The structure is made solely from local Valser quartzite and concrete and its geometric shape reflects a huge rock embedded in the hillside. Water, steam and heat add to the definition of areas within the ritual of the bath. The entrance is through an underground tunnel, with copper pipes coming out the walls, pouring the Valser water. As you'll come out the changing rooms, you'll reach a balcony that overlooks the baths and you'll be ready to start experiencing the thermal baths.

Because of its success, two years after it was built, it was declared a protected building.
