Mount Unzen is actually a group of active volcanoes on the island of Kyūshū. Japan's worst volcanic disaster was in 1792, when the eruption of Unzen caused the death of 15,000 people. Since then, only minor eruption took place, until 1991, when thousands of homes were evacuated and 43 people died.
