Formed over 30 million years ago, Waitomo Glowworm Caves have impressive decorations and three levels, connected by the Tomo, which is a 16 meters vertical limestone shaft. Banquet Chamber is at the second level, and is where visitors can stop to eat. The Cathedral at the third level is an 18 meters high area, with great acoustics. Many famous singers performed here. A boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto is perfect for ending your tour. The only light in the grotto is from the little glowworms.

These fascinating glowworms continue to intrigue people and the cave remains a top attraction in New Zealand, as this the only place where they can be found. The tiny creatures, called Arachnocampa luminosa, are about the size of a mosquito and radiate luminescent light. One has to spend at least twenty minutes in the dark to adjust to the glowworm lights.
