Sand Bar in Choiseul, Solomon Islands

One of the Solomon Islands, discovered in 1568 by a Spanish explorer, who first named it San Marcos. After 200 years, French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville rediscovered it and named it after the Minister of foreign affairs Choiseul.

It has an area of 2,100 square kilometers and it is largely surrounded by barrier reefs. It is densely wooded and mountainous, and its highest peak is Mount Maetambe measuring 3,500 feet (1,067 meters).
