The smallest village in the Upper Engadin is a true oasis of relaxation, and offers numerous ways in which to spend unforgettable holidays. The region’s attractive ski areas lie close by. Cross-country skiers have a wide choice of varied and contrasting trails through the magical winter landscape to explore. Especially recommended is a walk up to the ruins of Guardaval, once the largest castle in the Upper Engadin, or a toboggan ride on the toboggan trail above the village.
Cross-country ski enthusiasts, however, need to go no further than their doorstep. For the smart little village, with its 173 inhabitants, its typical Engadin houses and its carefully fostered Romansh culture, lies directly on the route of the Engadin Ski Marathon. Madulain also offers both serious athletes and hobby skiers excellent opportunities to access the 180 km (112 mile) network of cross-country trails. And, in fact, animal lovers too: Nordic skiers who want to take their dogs along can do
so here on the only specially marked dog trail in the Upper Engadin.
All around Madulain, which enjoys an idyllic setting by the River Inn, far removed from the rest of the world and basking in the sun, there are perfectly prepared winter hiking paths. A particularly spectacular route leads up to the Guardaval ruins, the largest castle complex in the Upper Engadin. And a similarly fairytale-like experience can be enjoyed by active winter sports fans of all ages on a ride down the toboggan run starting from the top of the village.
