As the finish point of the Engadin Ski Marathon, this small, picturesque, Romansh-speaking village is famous for cross-country skiing; among the many varied trails is the idyllic forest route to Zernez. Young guests are particularly at home at the Bügls children’s ski lift. Horse-lovers, meanwhile, can enjoy an enchanting ride through the wintry landscape or a romantic outing in a horse-drawn sleigh to Varusch. In summer, S-chanf is a wonderful base for hikes in the Swiss National Park.

Six hundred inhabitants, every second one of whom speaks Rhaeto-Romanic. An intact historic village centre that exudes an irresistible, primeval charm. A culture that is strongly rooted in its Romanic origins. And right on the doorstep, nature that is so unique that much of it is officially protected. Over the last decades, the tiny hamlet situated at the gateway to the Swiss National Park has considerably gained in importance as a tourist resort, yet it has still managed to preserve its awareness for local traditions in a natural, unforced manner. Here, the Engadin way of life is not simply celebrated, but actively lived to the full.

In winter, the village smartens itself up in readiness for its guests and presents itself – not without a degree of pride – as the final destination on the Engadin Ski Marathon route. However, at the same time it is also a departure point for particularly varied cross-country ski trails, such as the dreamily romantic stretch through the woods to Zernez, which is not just reserved for proficient skiers, but also equally impresses nature lovers. Thanks to a number of spectacular ski areas in the close vicinity, S-chanf can justifiably be content with its own Bügls children ski lift.
