General

The territory of Târgu-Mures has been the cradle of human settlements, starting from ancient times. Numerous material proofs attest the presence of Neolithic cultures and then those of the Bronze and Metal Ages.

Capital of the Mureş County, the municipality represents a powerful administrative, economic and cultural centre, having 149,577 inhabitants. Situated in the centre of Transylvania and Romania, at the intersection of many national and European roads, the municipality is a railway, road and airway junction.

An important landmark of the city is it's citadel. The Medieval Citadel is close to the town centre. The Citadel complex lies on a surface of 4,3 hectares and it is made up of a fortified inner area and 7 bastions united by walls, thus forming an inner yard, where the Protestant Church and the Bakery Building are located. The first fortress of the town, built on the current place in 1492, at the disposal of the duke of Transylvania, Báthori István, was finalized between 1602-1652.

The centrally located Roses Square (Piata Trandafirilor) is lined with modern streetside cafes and restaurants, churches, and monuments. Targu Mures' top attraction is located at the south end of the square: the Culture Palace (Palatul Culturii), a flamboyant early 20th-century city hall with an outstanding stained-glass hall, housing some of main local museums.

Many festivals take place during the year, depending on when you visit, you may just catch one of them: The Tîrgu-Mures Musical Days - in May, Félsziget Festival - last weekend in July, The Theatre Festival "Dramafest" - in October, The Wine Celebration - in October.
