Seven villages from Transylvania (Biertan, Calnic, Darjiu, Prejmer, Saschiz, Valea Viilor, Viscri) together with their fortified churches are all part of UNESCO World Heritage.
The most famous is the church from Biertan, built between the years 1486 and 1524, in Gothic style. The construction was limited by the configuration of the terrain it was built on. The altar represents "la piece de resistance", being the biggest in Transylvania. In the middle can be found a sculpture representing Virgin Mary, Jesus and Maria Magdalena embracing the cross. The whole assembly is made up from three precincts. The Clock Tour, within the first precinct, stands also as the gate tour, having four levels and a defence path.
The church in Saschiz, Mures county, was built in 1493, in the honor of king Stefan the 1st of Hungary. It is a massive construction, made out of quarry stone, in Gothic style. It was finished in 1525. It's fortification was built in the 14th century, with walls reaching a height of nine meters. The whole assembly was surrounded by a strong defence wall.
