Naturally, the undisputed number one attraction is the unique, 172 sq. km (66 sq. mile) large Swiss National Park, the country's biggest conservation area. It offers a unique wealth of Alpine flora and fauna in unspoilt, wildly beautiful natural surroundings. However, during the winter months it lies under a deep carpet of snow and gives visitors the cold shoulder. But fortunately the visitors’ centre, with its impressive multimedia exhibition, is now also open during the winter, allowing guests to experience the national park all the year round.

But the pretty Engadin village is not just the gateway to the National Park, but also a tranquil departure point for all the large skis areas in the region. And right on its doorstep, the cross-country ski trails begin, leading through the enchanting expanse of the Upper Engadin, down into the wildly romantic Lower Engadin and (now also floodlit at night) all around Zernez. Anyone wishing to get really close to nature can join a guided snowshoe tour, for example on the Ofen Pass. And the Munt Baselgia toboggan run, the artificial ice rink and the unique natural-ice rink provide variation of the rather more lively kind.

Zernez also lies close to the region’s large ski areas. A magnificent choice of idyllic cross-country ski trails leads into the great expanse of the Upper Engadin, as well as towards the Lower Engadin; one highlight is the illuminated night trail. The surroundings are also the ideal setting for guided snowshoe hikes – on the Ofen Pass, for example. More fun is on offer at the Munt Baselgia toboggan run, the artificial ice rink and the wonderful natural ice rink. The attractive family pool and the fascinating National Park Visitor Centre are especially worth a visit should the sun choose not to shine.
