Hotel description

The Canary Islands are hardly an undiscovered vacation spot. In recent decades, the sunny Spanish getaway, and the island of Tenerife in particular, have become synonymous with hordes of visitors on holiday. It’s a highly developed tourist destination, with the benefit that travelers can find almost anything they need. But unique, stylish hotels have remained somewhat elusive, in a sea of chain resorts catering to families and spring breakers.

The Abama is no precious little boutique. It’s a vast upscale hotel and villa complex, with eight swimming pools, a golf course, a private beach, a full spa — but set in spaces that embody earthy chic rather than bland corporate anti-style.

Located atop a cliff in Guía de Isora, on the western shore of the island, the Abama consists of the Citadel, a large asymmetrical building housing most of the guest rooms, and a series of private villas. The villas, of course, are more spacious and private than the standard suites. But all guest lodgings feature simple, plush décor in natural hues of sand and stone, airy bathrooms worth lingering in, and private terraces with expansive views of the Atlantic — not to mention the complimentary glass of champagne that greets each guest upon arrival. Five theme bars and ten restaurants serve up varied cuisine from fresh seafood to Argentine steak to Japanese noodle dishes — El Patio and the popular Mirador restaurant come especially highly recommended.
