Hotel description

Though it may sound perverse, there are some novelty-seekers and civilization-dodgers who find Zanzibar to be a bit too close to the beaten path. Lucky for them, there’s Pemba island, fifty kilometers to Zanzibar’s north. This is a place, like Zanzibar, largely known for the spice trade, a history of piracy, and a tradition of modern-day witchcraft — yet it’s even more rugged and undeveloped.

On the southwest end of Pemba Island lies Fundu Lagoon, a tiny and luxurious hotel at the edge of a forest along a spectacular white sand beach. There are just twelve rooms, each one a safari-style tent, some right at the water’s edge, others higher up the wooded hillside, with wider-ranging views and added privacy. And if it sounds like roughing it, it’s not — each comes with a private veranda or balcony, and some have their own plunge pools.

This place has been designed with an eye to style; the rooms are ruggedly handsome, the beds heaping with fine linens, and the public spaces are elegant. Meals are served in an open-air pavilion with a view of the sea, and guests gather round the jetty bar for cocktails. Services are minimal — you’re here for escape, not constant entertainment — but the dive center offers access to some of the finest undersea life in the world.

How to get there:

Getting to Fundu Lagoon requires three modes of transportation. From Zanzibar International Airport guest take a 30 minute flight to Pemba Airport. Then there is a 20 minute taxi ride to the coast. From there guests take a 30 minute speedboat ride to the resort. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers from Pemba Airport.
