Hotel Quinta do Lago isn’t the sort of place where you check in because you happen to be passing through Southern Portugal—this is a first-class luxury resort, a destination unto itself, attracting the likes of football stars, opera singers and genuine aristocracy from all over the world to the Algarve and to the Ria Formosa estuary. As a holiday destination, people may not mention the Algarve in the same breath as the Côte D’Azur—but for those in the know, that’s part of the charm.
The location is in the middle of the a nature sanctuary, surrounded by two thousand acres of pines and facing an unspoiled white sand beach—the sort of landscape which is in understandably short supply in other development-mad areas of the coastline. It’s a modest one-kilometer walk to the seaside, but one that’s worth making, if only to experience the surreal sight of a beach in Western Europe that’s not covered to the last inch in blankets and parasols.
As for the hotel, it’s untrammeled luxury all the way, and with the service to match. Guest rooms are spacious, airy and plush, with thick carpeting and elegant furniture, and overlook a saltwater lagoon or the golf courses from private balconies. The poolside terrace is ideal for basking in the continual sunshine, and golfers are in paradise, with two PGA European Tour courses on site and a number of others within easy reach. A full-service spa and two restaurants, one Portuguese and one Venetian, round out the hotel’s leisure facilities, and a range of meeting and business services are provided as well.
How to get there:
The Hotel Quinta do Lago is located 20 km from Faro International airport and is a two hour drive from Seville. The drive from Faro takes 20 minutes. Contact the hotel to arrange airport transfers.
