In a town known for its ramshackle, bohemian charm, a place like Myhotel Brighton can’t help but stand out. The design, by Karim Rashid, is anything but traditional: whether it looks retro-futuristic or just plain futuristic probably depends on the observer, but either way the visual impact is clearly of paramount concern.
It’s something of a throwback in at least one important respect: with more and more boutique hotels drawing inward, stressing intimacy and exclusivity, it’s almost a novelty to see a hotel where this much is made of the cocktail bar. This one, the inscrutably named Merkaba, is a destination unto itself, attracting well-heeled drinkers in search of a bit of high-design sophistication.
An Italian brasserie serves a seafood-centric cuisine in a Barbarella-esque dining room or al fresco on the terrace. Oh, and there are some rooms, 80 of them in fact, each one colorfully decorated and even more colorfully lit, with a touch of Beatles-era India chic about them, along with thoroughly modern amenities like flat-screen televisions and MP3 stereo systems. A small gym, mini-spa, and library see to your leisure needs, and central Brighton is just outside, with the beach only blocks away.
