There’s plenty of new building going on in Hamburg, but you won’t find any of it here. The new Park Hyatt is a retrofit, occupying the upper floors of a classic warehouse in the center of town. And it’s no ordinary warehouse — the Levantehaus dates back to when a warehouse was something worth looking at, and the shops, restaurants and cafes of its lower floors are already a local attraction.
So it’s a worthy location for a hotel that aims to be the class of Hamburg — and if that’s what Hyatt are after it seems they’ve accomplished it. The Park Hyatt can’t pretend to the historical opulence of some of the city’s older grand hotels, but its signature contemporary-luxe look sets a mood all its own.
Of course there’s plenty in the way of tangible comforts to recommend it. Under their sleek surfaces the rooms come with the state of the art in amenities, both high-tech and low, and the facilities are predictably top-notch, from the business services to the spa, gym and indoor pool. And while some high-end hotel kitchens lose focus in straining to be all things to all people, the Park Hyatt’s Apples sticks to wood-fired and lava-stone-grilled Mediterranean classics, prepared in an open kitchen.
