Hotel description

From the way the travel press tells the story you’d think Marrakech was Morocco in its entirety. But those who have the time for a bit of rambling often find themselves taking some time by the sea in Essaouira (formerly Mogador), a town that’s no less charming than Marrakech, but quite a lot more tranquil. And if you want to do Essaouira in high style then the place to start is the cumbersomely named but comfortably equipped Sofitel Essaouira Medina & Spa.

The rooms are crisp and contemporary in design, equal parts contemporary-luxe and mod-Moroccan, and lack for nothing in the way of room amenities — up-to-date electronics, separate tubs and showers, and, in many of them, private balconies. From here you can see either the medina or the Mediterranean, before nipping down to the spa (or more properly the Thalassotherapy Institute) for a bit of those magical healing waters.

It’s impossible to overstate how much Essaouira, and in turn this Sofitel, is improved by the presence of the beach — Marrakech could use one of these, and perhaps some enterprising hotelier will find a way to make it happen. In the meantime — which could be a while — this is your seaside Moroccan connection.

How to get there:

Sofitel Essaouira Medina & Spa is 20 minutes from Essaouira Airport. An airport shuttle service is available for EUR 10 per person per trip.
