The Dylan Amsterdam is its own beast, its rich striped fabrics and dramatically ornamented rooms referencing the Netherlands' Asian colonial history, rather than the watered-down Zen aesthetic (lacquered furniture in an empty beige room) that passes for chic in the burgeoning mini-genre of Blakes London imitators the world over.
Of course there are rooms in more subdued styles, in case bold red and black stripes are not your idea of soothing décor, some in bright white and natural wood, others jade green, and still others in black and white, to match the hotel's public spaces. The visually striking rooms are comfortable, too - the linens are actually made of linen, for example, which is less common than it may sound.
Behind the building, in a secluded courtyard, are the garden, the bar, and the restaurant, which is as unrelentingly bold and unique as the hotel itself. The cuisine is international in scope, blending traditional and modern elements, influenced by the contemporary French cuisine.
The hotel is only part of the equation, as Amsterdam is not a town for shut-ins. The Dylan keeps an armada of black bicycles parked outside for guests to rent, and it’s more than a gimmick, as Amsterdam is an extremely bicycle-friendly town. The location is central, and thus quite close to the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh museum, as well as a variety of shopping and café districts. In the winter, ice skate along the frozen canals with the locals — you can’t do that in London.
