It takes all kinds, in the Napa/Sonoma wine country of Northern California, from rustic little B&Bs to big-time luxury resorts and everything in between. And in the “in between” category goes the Kenwood Inn and Spa. As is often the case in the American wine country, this one is a charming reproduction of a European style, a Mediterranean villa by the side of the Sonoma Highway.
The twenty-two guest rooms are ornate, antique in style, spread over two floors, some with ground-floor patios and others with balconies looking in toward the gardens and pool or out to the vineyards and the woods beyond. They’re equipped at very least with king or queen beds, fireplaces and full baths, and in some cases jacuzzi tubs.
It’s not just the décor that aims for an air of refinement. The Kenwood Inn sets itself apart with an adults-only policy; no dogs either, and no televisions in the rooms. Think romantic spa weekend, rather than family vacation, and a quite sensible emphasis on food and wine — both in the Kenwood’s own restaurant and beyond, in the Sonoma and Napa valleys, the joint culinary and wine-making capital of the western United States.
