London is home to some truly bizarre experiments in hotel design, featuring some of the most daringly modern interiors anywhere; but the Milestone, delightfully, pretends to have taken no notice of this trend. This is as traditional as London gets, from antique four-posters and sleigh beds to the rich fabric wall coverings and the meticulously arranged props-one military-themed room, for example, features a dresser’s dummy in full regalia, complete with trumpet.
Service is royal, upright yet exceedingly personal-expect everyone to know your name, rather like Lost in Translation, except without all the Japanese bits. If it can be done, they’ll find a way to do it, and you’ll have no fun trying to wind up the utterly unflappable staff. Get too used to it and you’ll be tempted to move into one of the six apartments, just to have this crew at your fingertips every day.
Though a small boutique hotel, packed into two Victorian townhouses, the Milestone offers some services beyond the norm, including a well-equipped fitness center, rather than discount passes to someplace down the street, as well as extensive meeting facilities.
The cuisine is almost over-the-top British, from fine dining in Cheneston’s Restaurant and Oratory (even the name is almost too English to be true) to the more casual Conservatory, to afternoon tea in the Park Lounge, with deep armchairs and a view of Kensington Gardens. And the location is classic London as well, just across from Kensington Palace, with easy access to Hyde Park, Royal Albert Hall, and Harrods, for a start.
