Hotel description

Please note: The Reefs requires a 5 night minimum stay between April 14 - November 2.

Many island resorts have the feel of big-time rackets, moneymaking operations, where the hospitality, though welcoming, seems incidental, even a distraction to the primary function of separating travelers from their wallets. Not so at The Reefs, in Southampton, Bermuda.

The Reefs is consistently rated in the travel press as one of Bermuda's top resorts (often named as top Caribbean resort, although it is well north of the Caribbean). We tend to take the pronouncements of the travel press with a grain of salt, but in this case, there is more than a little truth to the buzz.

The key, we believe, is in the intimate, personal nature of The Reefs. Not just an air of discreet privacy, although that is there too, and makes The Reefs a favorite destination for honeymooners. But the service - the service is extraordinary, not in a servile and anonymous way, but in a highly personal sense. More than half the guests at any given moment are repeat customers, and many of the staff members have been at the resort for decades - so there is ample opportunity for employees and guests to get to know each other. There is one guest, unnamed, who has visited more than one hundred times; and as for staff, take the example of still-current employees Sylvia and Slippery, who were hired on the same day in 1952.

The resort itself is picturesque, all in Bermuda pink (naturally), and suffers from no shortage of panoramic sea views, as it is situated on a low rock outcropping over the ocean. For even more privacy, there are private cottages, separate from the main resort, either among the gardens or at the oceanfront.

Activities on offer include snorkeling, kayaking, and tennis, and there is a pool and a fitness center. Sailing and diving can be arranged as well. Lounging on the beach, of course, is not exactly frowned upon here, and bicycles and mopeds are available for those who wish to explore on land.

A special note for golfers: Bermuda has a higher proportion of its acreage devoted to golf than any other nation in the world, so expect to have no problem finding an appealing course - in fact there are three courses within five minutes of the resort.
