While others are narrower or more challenging to explore, the length and variety of the terrain in the gulch make it the best overall. The canyon is narrow for 12 miles; the cliffs become steadily higher downstream, reaching a height of 500 feet above the streambed at the end, where Buckskin Gulch meets the Paria River which also flows through a deep canyon for several miles either side of the confluence.
The walls of both canyons are rather dark, and the great depth means that the sun rarely illuminates the narrow passages fully. The walls of the gulch show the characteristic swirls and curves worn by countless millennia of floods, and they are eroded into innumerable eerie rock formations which can resemble all kinds of distorted creatures and strange objects. This area is unique in the world and you will not see this anywhere else.
Photography is unlimited in this desert landscape with the orange and pink formations created under ancient sea beds. Vermilion Cliffs is famous for the Coyote Buttes and "The Wave" and there is a permit system to enter this area. Fortunately there are also many great areas that are permit free including White pockets and Buckskin Gulch. We offer day and multi day tours in the Paria Canyon and Buckskin gulch and will gladly try for permits in the wave area as well as South coyote buttes on request. But don't let permit denial persuade you from enjoying this scenic adventure of a lifetime. We are equipped with the right vehicles and guides to offer a special trip outside of the crowds.
