Highlights / General details

This full-day escape offers ample opportunities for adventure, exploration, learning, and having fun! Old and new growth forests, birds, wildlife, lakes, waterfalls and river valleys connected to Glaciers are just a few of the sights you may see as you snowshoe high above the hiking trails.

Itinerary Mount Hood, called Wy’east by local tribes, is Oregon’s highest point and a prominent landmark visible up to a hundred miles away. The mountain has six ski areas: Timberline, Mount Hood Meadows, Ski Bowl, Cooper Spur, Snow Bunny and Summit. Your expedition begins high on the Mountain near Government Camp, in the heart of Mt. Hood National Forest. Depending on conditions, your guide will pick the Trail of the Day and embark on an interpretive snowshoe through a northwest winter wonderland experiencing the season’s beauty and the adaptive ecosystem!

Track and spot wildlife and wintering birds, all the while making sure we take time just taking in some magical scenery. Your naturalist guide will also share their vast knowledge of winter ecology, sustainability during the winter and extreme weather wilderness survival skills. You will witness a grand landscape in motion – as seen from a geological perspective, your guide will describe the forces that have shaped the land, creating the sparkling blue alpine lakes and breathtaking panoramas that abound here. After a day making trails, we head even farther up the Mountain to the historic Timberline Lodge. Built in the late 1930s, the National Historic Landmark sits at an elevation of 5,960 feet (1,817 m), within the Mount Hood National Forest. This popular tourist attraction draws more than a million visitors every year! You may recognize the drive up and the Lodge’s exterior, because it was used in the filming Steven King’s The Shining. Inside we will cozy up to the giant fireplace and enjoy a cup of their famous hot chocolate and perhaps a glass or two of fine Oregon wine to go along with a delicious picnic lunch. With our bellies full and our hearts content, we descend the great Mountain and head back to the city of Portland. This escape will no doubt quench your thirst for an authentic Pacific Northwest winter adventure!
