The visit to Puerto Montt begins with a panoramic view from the Viewpoint, going down towards downtown through the residential district and government buildings, to the Main Square with its Cathedral, the monument to the German settlers, the church of the Jesuit, through the Urmeneta street and Antonio Varas street, towards the commercial and harbor zones, in direction towards the town of Chinquihue, returning through the fish and seafood market of Angelmó with its colorful craftsmanship fair. Continuing through the Pan-American highway towards the city of Puerto Varas, in front of the Llanquihue Lake, going down San Francisco street and its parochial church (1917). Then on to to see Vicente Perez Rosales Main Square, Municipal Casino, residential districts with their old houses (some of them declared National Monument), through the promenade that goes along the borders of the lake towards the Philippi hill, from where a panoramic view of the city of Puerto Varas and the surroundings is obtained.
Then continue skirting the Llanquihue Lake up to arrival at Frutillar. Founded in 1856 as a shipping port for the settlers living next to the Llanquihue Lake, still holding the remains of its German ancestry. Frutillar has experienced a significant tourist boom during the past two decades, fueled mainly by the ingenuity and effort of its inhabitants who have restored and refurbished traditional buildings and built a magnificent waterfront promenade with flowers beds, also the Museo de la Colonización Alemana, an excellent insight into the life of the second generation of German settlers and finally, the Ancestor’s Memorial, built to commemorate the areas first settlers.
