Known as the capital of the Puna, San Antonio de los Cobres is one of the highest altitude towns in Argentina at 12,300 feet (3,750 meters). Like every village in Northern Argentina, San Antonio de los Cobres has a school, church, hotels, restaurants and, of course, mines. Mining is the main industrial activity of the area and contributes in many ways to the towns distinct colors, tastes and sounds.
San Antonio de los Cobres is famous for its woven items: stockings, hats, gloves, shawls, sweaters, quilts and blankets, woven by loom or needle. The needles used are made from large cardon, cacti, or with the wood of a small local bush which interestingly prevents users from pricking their finger.
Take a stroll down the gentile rustic streets of the city to meet its people, from the oldest settlers chewing coca to the youngest children playing in schoolyards. You might catch locals chatting about the rainy season and mining operations or eating a favorite local specialty dish of llama prepared in every conceivable variation. You will have many opportunities to learn the local customs and routines as we explore the city.
We will attend mass in the early morning where most San Antonio locals gather before starting their day. This tradition allows them to show visitors that the village is alive and inviting, even without its famous train. Later we will travel up one of the surrounding mountains to see the city and the entire region from a new perspective.
The humble people of San Antonio de los Cobres welcome you to come experience their way of life.
