Rowing across the glacial lake.

Seeing imposing Bled castle perched over the lake.

Trekking through the picturesque Julien Alps.

Trying Slovenian wine in Bled’s town centre.

It seems to us that Slovenia just doesn't know how to stop when it comes to offering up incredible holiday destinations. If it's not perfectly pretty Ljubljana - one of the best city breaks in the world (featured elsewhere on our site) - then it's the bewitching Lake Bled and its surrounds which rates in our book as a premium escapist's dream.

picture perfect

The alpine resort located on the edge of the Triglav National Park is regarded by Slovenians as the jewel in their country's crown - and who are we to disagree? With its emerald green lake, picture postcard backdrop of the peaks of the Julian alps, a beautiful islet with a 9th century church and medieval castle, Lake Bled is as close to a fairytale as we've ever come.

peaceful mountain treks and thermal springs

Spend days walking the shores, rowing on the lake (refreshingly, no motorboats are allowed) and, if activities appeal, trekking and mountain biking on the nearby slopes. With its thermal springs and mild climate, the Bled region is undoubtedly one of Europe's most attractive mountain resorts.

lakeside retreat

Accommodation is in Hotel Vila Bled, one of the most picturesque lakeside hotels in the world and once home to President Tito. Should you tire of peace and quiet, venture into Bled's town centre (only a 20 minute amble down the road) and revel in the fantastic hospitality of some typically Slovenian bars and restaurants.

So, to recap: a fairytale setting, a decidedly regal place to stay, some spectacular mountain wilderness to explore and a bustling provincial town - just don't forget your glass slippers.
