It was developed in the 19th century and it was supposed to be a neighborhood outside Barcelona, with markets, schools, a place where all people would want to live. But things didn't happen according to plan and Eixample turned out to be a a paradise for the wealthy, boasting in Modernista architecture, especially with the works of Antoni Gaudi. The most important of the streets, and which must not be missed by anyone, architectural aficionado or not, is the Passeig de Gràcia, one of the most architecturally important streets.

Even though Gaudi's work dominates the place, there are also other buildings just as beautiful, like Casa Terrades, Casa Lléo Morera, Fundació Tàpies and other modernist buildings designed by not so famous artists.
